MONTVILLE TWP.: A truck carrying boxes of chocolate overturned in Medina County early Tuesday morning spilling its load and injuring the driver.
The crash was reported around 1:30 a.m. just south of state Route 18.
Police had to close Interstate 71 northbound between Interstate 76 and state Route 18 in Medina County as rescuers had to free the driver and crews worked to clean up boxes of Ghirardelli Chocolate.
Montville Police Lt. Matthew Neil said the driver, whose name was not released, was “alert and conscious” when he was transported to the hospital for treatment.
“We hope he’s OK,” he said.
Authorities say the interstate was snow-covered when the crash occurred.
The truck and its load ended up across the interstate while the cab rolled down an embankment.
Firefighters had to use ropes to navigate the tricky snow-covered terrain to reach the driver.
Neil said this was one of the more unusual crashes he’s responded to.
“There was quite a bit of chocolate,” he said.
The northbound lanes of the interstate remained closed until 7 a.m. when one lane was opened to traffic.
The Ohio Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
