Former Kent State University President Brage Golding dead at 96

Former Kent State University President Brage Golding has died.

Golding, 96, served as president of the university from 1977 to 1982. He died Aug. 24 at his home in California.

“On behalf of the Kent State University worldwide community, I express sympathy to the family and friends of President Emeritus Golding,” said Beverly Warren, the university’s current president. “Our university owes a debt of gratitude for his leadership and dedication to our core mission of graduating students to lead productive lives.”

Golding, born in Chicago in 1920, earned a bachelor’s degree and doctorate in chemical engineering. He served in the military during World War II. His career as a university administrator led him to serve as president of Wright State University in 1966 and San Diego State University in 1972 as well.

According to Kent State, Golding’s accomplishments included establishing the Kent State University Museum and the Shannon Rodgers and Jerry Silverman School of Fashion Design and Merchandising.

His legacy at the university includes a scholarship in his name, established in 1992.
