Don’t despair, tree lovers.

The street trees along Exchange Street in downtown Akron that are being chopped down will be replaced.

“It’ll look a whole lot greener than it does now,” Akron Service Director John Moore promised Wednesday.

A contractor began taking down the trees Wednesday morning, the first sign of an upcoming $10.7 million, two-year, road-improvement project.

“We don’t cut these unless we have to,” Moore said.

He estimated that about 70 trees will be felled, but they will be replaced by 180 trees.

The project involves replacing sidewalks, curbs and the pavement from South Broadway to South Portage Path.

The work will involve lane closures but traffic will be maintained, Moore said.
