A Cleveland Clinic physician who has overseen two of the hospital’s suburban operations has been named president of Akron General.

Dr. Brian Harte’s appointment comes about 10 months after federal regulators signed off on Cleveland Clinic’s acquisition of Akron General, Lodi Community Hospital, the Edwin Shaw Rehabilitation Institute, three health & wellness centers, the Justin T. Rogers Hospice Care Center and Visiting Nurse Service and Affiliates.

Harte takes over Sept. 26, replacing Janice Murphy, who has served as interim director of Cleveland Clinic Akron General since May when Dr. Thomas “Tim” Stover abruptly retired. Stover helped forge the relationship between the two hospitals.

Murphy will return to her role as chief operating officer for Cleveland Clinic Regional Operations.

Harte has been president of Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights for three years.

“Brian is uniquely qualified to bring transformational leadership to Akron and throughout the Southern region,” said Dr. J. Stephen Jones president of Cleveland Clinic Regional Hospitals and Family Health Centers.

“The integration of Cleveland Clinic and Akron General is succeeding at a rapid pace,” Jones said. “I’m confident with Brian’s experience and proven successful leadership we will continue to drive positive change and to actualize true regionalization and grow our services for the benefit of the Akron community.”
