KABUL, Afghanistan: At least 20 people were killed and 119 others injured in three consecutive bombings at a funeral ceremony in Kabul on Saturday, officials said.

Afghan Public Health Minister Ferozuddin Feroz was among the people injured in the blasts — which took place at the funeral of Mohammad Salem Izedyar, the son of the deputy speaker of the Senate — according to Wahidullah Majroh, a spokesman for his ministry.

Salem was killed during a demonstration Friday when police fired into a crowd that was protesting an explosion that rocked the Afghan capital Wednesday.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani condemned Saturday’s attack, referring to it as "outrageous" and urging the people of the country to remain united.

Amrullah Saleh, state minister for reforms in the security sector, confirmed that he was unharmed despite attending the funeral ceremony.

He said his government must rethink its security policies and institutions and bring necessary reforms.

No group claimed responsibility for the incident. The Taliban denied involvement.

Altogether, 117 people have been killed and 586 others have been wounded in what has been the bloodiest week of the war in the Afghan capital.

Wednesday’s blast, one of the worst since 2001, killed about 90 people when an explosives-laden human-waste tanker blew up in the Green Zone, where many foreign embassies and government institutions are located.
