Good News — May 22: Two Revere students earn perfect scores on ACT tests; St. Anthony’s hosts Girls on the Run program; Girl Scouts honor Women of Distinction

Revere High School students junior Sydney Borcherding and sophomore Jack Krew received perfect scores of 36 on their ACT college admission exams this spring. Fewer than 1 percent of students who take the ACT receive a perfect score.

Girl Scouts of North East Ohio last week honored these nominees for the 2017 Women of Distinction award: Stephanie Brown-Houston, NASA Glenn Research Center; Debra Green, Medical Mutual; Victoria Kress, Youngstown State University; Ann Manby, AAA Akron board of trustees; Carole Mount, Walsh University; Ilene Shapiro, County of Summit; LaToya Smith, Fifth Third Bank; Cheryl Stawicki, Health Design Plus; Mary Verdi-Fletcher, Dancing Wheels; and Leila Vespoli, FirstEnergy.

The 10 nominees were selected by a committee of community members led by Women of Distinction Event Chair Theresa Carter. Carter is president of OMNOVA Solutions Foundation and a former Women of Distinction honoree. Sherwin-Williams Co. also received the organization’s Advancing Women Award for its commitment to advancing women in the workplace.

St. Sebastian Parish School recently partnered with Keep Akron Beautiful and helped pick up trash and litter on the parish and school campus as well as a few nearby sites. Each grade selected a different area they wanted to clean up.

Cascade Subaru recently presented a $13,500 check to the Conservancy for the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The money was raised during the 2016 holiday season when Subaru donated $250 to a local charity for every car sold. Subaru raised more than $20 million nationally during the event, which is now in its ninth year

Last November, CJ “Jimmy” Sporck, a Step2 employee for 24 years, died suddenly at the age of 44. Right before his death, he and his wife, Kristy, whom he met at Step2, put a down payment on a new puppy; but due to the financial impact of CJ’s passing, she would have to ask for her deposit back. Knowing how important this puppy was to both CJ and Kristy, Step2 held fundraisers, raffles, and made personal donations to surprise Kristy with her new little buddy.

Three area high school musicians were awarded diplomas for excelling in the National Piano Guild Auditions this spring. Revere junior Matt Lerner, Revere sophomore Connor Wainwright and Hoban sophomore Michael Jorgenson successfully passed adjudication of their individual piano solo programs. In addition, Lerner will receive the Paderewski Medal from the National Piano Guild for having performed 10-piece programs for each of the past 10 years, beginning in second grade. Lerner, Jorgenson and Wainwright study piano with Jennifer Stenroos of Bath.

The Gay Community Endowment Fund this month named Peter Schofield as the 2017 recipient of the Paul Daum Award. Schofield was a longtime board member and chair of the guidelines and policies committee. The endowment fund is an affiliated fund of the Akron Community Foundation.

St. Anthony’s School in Akron’s North Hill neighborhood is completing its first season as a participating site for the Girls on the Run program. A total of 11 girls from third through fifth grade are part of Girls on the Run, and 12 girls grades six through eight are participating in the school’s Heart and Sole group. The Heart and Sole coaches are teachers at the school. The younger group is coached by Alpha Delta Pi volunteers from the University of Akron. Girls on the Run is a national program that combines talking with track. Participants train for a 3.1-mile race while also addressing their emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development.
