Members of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local 285 Members Action Committee recently donated their time and skills to build a playground for the elementary branch of Summit Academy on Leland Avenue in Akron.
Mattison Davis, a sophomore at Lake Center Christian School in Hartville, recently led a school project to donate Easter baskets to kindergartners and first-graders at Helen E. Arnold elementary school in Akron, where her mother, LaMonica Davis, is the principal. The students made more than 100 baskets, which included toys, candy, stuffed animals and inspirational quotes.
Norma Rist, an advocate for women and a business management consultant, was honored with the Athena National Leadership Award. Recipients are selected for achieving the highest degree of professional excellence, assisting women in reaching their potential and compiling a body of work that has had a national or global impact.
Six faculty members from the School of Art at Kent State University have been awarded Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Awards for 2017. The winners include: Peter Christian Johnson (ceramics), Gianna Commito (painting), Janice Lessman-Moss (textiles), Lori Kella (photography), Andrea Myers (sculpture, Stark Campus) and Paul O’Keeffe (sculpture, professor emeritus). Each received a $5,000 award.
The Junior League of Stark County this month recognized Women of the Year award honorees Marcia K. Zawacky as the Community Award Recipient and Connie Rubin as the President’s Award Recipient.
St. Hilary School fifth-grader Mia Winkelmann was one of five students in grades five through eight from across Northeast Ohio to win the Spring 2017 Selling Bee, sponsored by the Young Entrepreneur Institute at University School. Entrants in the competition created a product design and submitted a short video “pitching” that product to judges. Her product, the Now Brush, is a hair brush with a compartment on the back in which hair accessories can be stored.
Armstrong and Dan’s Dogs Hot Dog Eatery & Diner are teaming up to donate medical service dogs to area veterans through Armstrong’s Healing Heroes initiative. Throughout the month of May, which is Military Appreciation Month, Dan’s Dogs Hot Dog Eatery & Diner, located at 111 W. Liberty St. in Medina, will donate $2 from every half-pound Angus beef St. Bernard hot dog sold to support Armstrong’s Healing Heroes initiative. Healing Heroes is a partnership program with Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs to provide highly trained service dogs to qualifying disabled veterans struggling with disabilities such as post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injuries, seizure disorders and other conditions.
Children’s Concert Society of Akron recently announced the winners of its 64th Scholastic Composers Contest. Winners include Olivia Eunsol Lee, Old Trail School; Jai Arora, McDowell Elementary; Caitlin E. Moyer, Chapel Hill Christian-North; Serena Guo, Bath Elementary School; Jacob Kim, St. Hilary School; Arthur Li, University School; Edward Dan, Solon High School; Cole Johnson, Firestone High School; Ann Yan and Stanley Xiao, Copley High School.
