You likely are extremely familiar with the largest employer in Ohio.
Spoiler alert: It’s Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world’s largest retailer — and world’s largest private employer — based in Arkansas. In Ohio, Wal-Mart has some 50,500 employees at 173 Wal-Mart stores and five distribution centers.
That jobs nugget comes from the new list of top employers in the state, compiled by the Ohio Development Services Agency’s research office, affiliated with the U.S. Census Bureau.
Four of Ohio’s top 10 employers are health-related, according to the state compilation.
Ohio’s top 10 largest employers are:
• Wal-Mart, 50,500.
• Cleveland Clinic Foundation. 49,050.
• Kroger Co., 43,850.
• Ohio State University, 32,100.
• Mercy Health, 32,035.
• Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, 27,600.
• University Hospitals Health Systems Inc., 26,000.
• Ohio Health, 22,340.
• JPMorgan Chase & Co., 21,000.
• Giant Eagle Inc., 19,000.
Of the 100 largest employers in Ohio, the following of note to Northeast Ohio residents are, in order:
• 40. Huntington Bancshares Inc., 8,400.
• 43. Summa Health System, 7,400.
• 48. FirstEnergy Corp., 6,975.
• 65. Kent State University, 5,200.
• 70. Akron Children’s Hospital, 4,600.
• 74. Signet Jewelers Ltd./Sterling Jewelers Inc., 4,150.
• 82. University of Akron, 3,700.
• 95. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., 3,300.
Tied for largest manufacturing employer in Ohio are General Electric and Honda Motor Co., each with 14,500 employees.
Akron-based Goodyear is the state’s 16th largest manufacturing employer.
Bridgestone Corp.’s Akron operations make it the state’s 21st largest manufacturing employer with 2,750 employees.
TimkenSteel Corp. in Canton is Ohio’s 25th largest manufacturing employer with 2,350 employees.
