AKRON

Mayor Horrigan plans talks

AKRON: Mayor Dan Horrigan will host seven Neighborhood Town Hall meetings from April through August. The meetings will offer residents an opportunity to question and hear from the mayor.

Parents are encouraged to bring teens and young adults to learn more about city government and civic engagement. Billy Soule, assistant to the mayor for community relations, will facilitate the 75-minute sessions.

The sessions will begin at 6 p.m. The first will be held Thursday at Hyre school, 2385 Wedgewood Drive, followed by May 11 at Innes school, 1999 East Ave.; May 23 at Forest Hill school, 850 Damon St.; June 15 at David Hill school, 1060 E. Archwood Ave.; June 27 at Schumacher school, 1020 Hartford Ave.; July 25 at Resnik school, 65 N. Meadowcroft Drive; and Aug. 17 at Seiberling school, 400 Brittain Road.

CLEVELAND

Two dead at car dealership

CLEVELAND: Police in Cleveland say a husband and wife who owned a car dealership were found shot to death at their business.

A police spokeswoman said the shooting occurred Friday night at Mr. Cars Inc. at 726 E. 185th St. on the city’s east side. No arrests have been made.

Investigators said the couple’s 19-year-old son went to the dealership because he couldn’t reach his parents and found both had been shot in the head. City officials identified the couple as Trina Kuznik, 45, and Michael Kuznik, 50.

Police said some items were missing from the dealership’s office.

Grants to address violence

KENT: Kent State University has received three grants worth about $450,000 to start awareness and prevention initiatives on sexual harassment and assault, relationship violence and stalking on campus.

The largest grant is for $300,000 and comes from the U.S. Office on Violence Against Women. Kent State also received $15,000 from the Ohio Department of Higher Education’s Changing Campus Culture initiative and $135,000 from the Victims of Crime Act.

The school’s Office of Sexual and Relationship Violence and Support Services will oversee the programs.

sUMMIT COUNTY

Funds for hearing program

The Summit Educational Service Center’s TALK program has received a grant from the GPD Foundation for its Hear, Talk, Learn Expanded project.

The program will receive $6,951 to be used immediately, according to a news release. Funds also will be used for equipment and training for the 2017-2018 school year. This is a continuation of a grant received from the foundation last year.

The grant will allow the program to continue maximizing auditory access for children with hearing loss in Summit County through hearing technology and specialized professional learning. This will provide the students with hearing loss increased access to learning. It also will allow the program to expand the number of students who are served.

The TALK program’s staff members also will be able to have more professional learning opportunities.

PORTAGE COUNTY

Cleanup volunteers sought

RAVENNA: Celebrate Earth Day with Ohio State Parks. Volunteers are needed for a shoreline and roadside litter cleanup at West Branch State Park from noon to 9 a.m. Saturday. The cleanup will begin at the West Boat Ramp on Rock Spring Road.

Individuals and groups will be assigned to an area when they arrive. Volunteers should dress for the weather and bring work gloves. Recyclable collection bags and trash bags will be provided.

Following the cleanup, participants will be treated to a hot dog cookout and potluck-style lunch sponsored by the Friends of West Branch State Park. Volunteers are encouraged to bring a dish to share for the potluck, if possible.
