A 24-year-old man was killed early Wednesday morning in a work-related accident at an Akron recycling facility.
The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office and Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating.
The victim, who hasn’t been identified, was working on a baler machine at 4:35 a.m. at Greenstar Recycling, 1535 Exeter Road, when he became trapped inside and sustained fatal injuries, authorities said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
OSHA spokesman Scott Allen said investigators were headed to the scene and have opened an investigation.
“We’ll conduct interviews with the employer, any potential witnesses and other employees and try to find out if the company was following OSHA standards and regulations,” he said.
Greenstar, which is based in Houston, couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
The company opened the $7 million facility to sort and recycle newspaper, plastics, metals, cardboard and glass in Akron in 2012. At the time, the company employed 43 workers.
Akron inked a 10-year deal with Greenstar at the time to handle the city’s recyclables.
