COPLEY TWP.: Officials said an explosion Tuesday night in northeast Copley Township was caused by a fire in a backyard fire pit.
The loud boom brought police and fire fighters to Sugar Road and caused much speculation as to the cause on social media.
Fire Chief Michael Benson told trustees at their Wednesday night meeting that one to two gallons of gasoline was used to ignite a fire to burn trash, including a mattress. No one was injured.
Benson said the resident was not cited but the incident will be reported to the Akron Regional Air Quality Management District which oversees air quality issues.
