Gatehouse Media, owner of the Canton Repository, Massillon Independent and Columbus Dispatch, announced Tuesday that it has purchased Dix Communications. The chain had been operated by the Dix family since its start in 1893.
The acquisition adds five daily newspapers — including the Record-Courier in Kent-Ravenna, the Daily Record in Wooster and the Alliance Review — to Gatehouse’s foothold in Ohio. The Pittsford, N.Y.-based company has about 50 other publications and websites in the Buckeye State and more than 125 daily newspapers nationwide.
Gatehouse will also add to its more than 300 weekly community newspapers with the purchase of Dix, acquiring the Aurora Advocate, the Cuyahoga Falls News-Press, the Hudson Hub-Times, the Streetsboro Gateway News, the Stow Sentry, the Tallmadge Express, the Twinsburg Bulletin and the Nordonia Hills News-Leader.
Financial terms were not disclosed in stories posted on the media companies’ websites. Officials from Dix and Gatehouse could not be reached.
