A meeting to discuss Summa Health Systems’s decision to replace its emergency room physicians will be held at 6 p.m. this evening at Highland Theater, 826 W. Market St. in Akron.
The meeting is hosted by just-terminated teaching attending physicians, medical staff and residents from Summa. It is open to the public.
Summa Health System opted to replace Summa Emergency Associates (SEA) with a group of doctors paid by US Acute Care Solutions when the SEA contract expired at midnight Saturday. The changeover surfaced publicly late last week.
An email about the today’s meeting said the SEA doctors are continuing to educate the public because they feel “ethically obligated to do so.” The email noted that US Acute Care Solutions has yet to name an emergency medicine resident director.
The change applied to staffing at Akron City Hospital and Summa facilities in Barberton, Green, Medina and Wadsworth.
Resident physicians at Summa voted no confidence in President and Chief Executive Officer Thomas Malone because of the doctor switch. The vote, announced Sunday, was signed “House Staff Council,” which represents about 230 Summa residents.
