Learn about local Civil War hero

His name is on an Akron school, but do you know anything about Gen. Alvin Coe Voris? The Civil War brevet major was also an attorney, state legislator, judge, abolitionist and women’s rights advocate. Learn more about him at 6:30 p.m. at the Akron-Summit County Public Library, Green branch, 4046 Massillon Road, Green. Ted Dudra, a historical re-enactor, will portray Voris, the highest-ranking officer from Summit County during the Civil War. 330-896-9074.

Attend a benefit gala auction

Project Ed Bear provides comfort and improves life for children suffering from cancer. The group’s Gala Auction will be held at 5 p.m. at Quaker Station, 135 S. Broadway St., Akron, where kids will get to walk a red carpet and receive awards for bravery. Tickets are $30 at www.projectedbear.org.
