An Akron family is staying with relatives over the Thanksgiving holiday after a fire Tuesday severely damaged their home on Highview Avenue in Firestone Park.
Three children, ages 11, 9 and 8, escaped their burning house at 5:25 p.m. and called 911, authorities said.
No one was injured in the fire at 1905 Highview Ave. but the family couldn’t stay there because of the damage, Akron Fire Lt. Sierjie Lash said.
The fire was caused by food left on the stove. The children’s parents were not home at the time.
The American Red Cross was called in and provided short-term financial assistance to help with food and clothing. The Red Cross said the family is now staying with relatives.
“We’re going to make sure they are taken care of for the holiday,” Lash said.
The parents could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
The American Red Cross said, on average, three families a day experience fires that leave them temporarily homeless in a 22-county region of Northeast Ohio.
