Union terminates arbitrator over ruling, source says
• The baseball players’ union has fired arbitrator Fredric Horowitz, a person familiar with the decision told the Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the firing was not publicly announced. Dan Halem, Major League Baseball’s chief legal officer, informed general managers at their meeting this week. The players’ association made the decision after Horowitz ruled against it in an injury assignment case involving Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Charlie Culberson. Horowitz, 68, started as baseball’s neutral arbitrator in June 2012.
• The Los Angeles Angels agreed to a $1 million, one-year contract to keep right-handed reliever Andrew Bailey, the first of this year’s 157 free agents to reach a deal. Bailey, 32, revitalized his career last season with the Angels, posting six saves with a 2.38 ERA in 12 appearances.

Georgia Tech suspends rusher for two games
• Georgia Tech freshman Dedrick Mills, the team’s leading rusher, has been suspended for two games for an undisclosed violation of team rules. The suspension, announced by coach Paul Johnson, is the second of the season for Mills. He also was held out of Georgia Tech’s home opener against Mercer on Sept. 10, also for a violation of team rules.
• Georgia State received approval to purchase Turner Field for $22.8 million, clearing the way to convert the former home of the Atlanta Braves into a downsized college football stadium.

U.S. men’s team comes home to Columbus
• The U.S. men’s soccer team is back in Columbus this week, where it enjoys a distinct home-field advantage. MAPFRE Stadium, the 20,000-seat site of the MLS Columbus Crew, on Friday night will host the biggest international soccer game on American soil in three years: U.S. vs. Mexico in a qualifying match for the 2018 World Cup.
• Landon Donovan says he is not ready to decide whether he will extend his MLS comeback for another season following the LA Galaxy’s elimination from the playoffs. The 34-year-old is the top scorer in the history of MLS and the U.S. national team.

Sabres forward Kane back in lineup after rib injury
• Sabres forward Evander Kane returned, and star center Jack Eichel might not be too far behind. Coach Dan Bylsma announced Kane would play against Ottawa in his first game since missing 11 with broken ribs. As for Eichel, Bylsma said he was meeting with a doctor to have his sprained left ankle evaluated and could soon be cleared for on-ice workouts.
• The 2021 Solheim Cup golf matches between the U.S. and Europe will be played at Inverness Club in Toledo, the LPGA Tour announced.
