AKRON

Inaugural health summit

AKRON: Premature birth and infant mortality in Akron will be the topic at Mayor Dan Horrigan’s inaugural Health Equity Summit on Thursday at the Akron-Summit County Public Library, 60 S. High St.

The goal is to assemble health care leaders and workers, social service agencies, government leaders, community activists and citizens to develop a citywide plan. Researchers will discuss the causes of prematurity and infant mortality, including social, economic and health factors, and potential strategies to improve maternal and infant health.

“One’s race or ZIP code should never be a factor in maternal health or life expectancy,” Horrigan said in a news release.

Breakfast and sign-in will begin at 7:45 a.m. with the program from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Register at www.eeds.com/live/153408. Early registration deadline is Monday. Late registration deadline is the day of the event.

The event is free and parking will be free with validation.

For more information, call Terry Albanese, assistant to the mayor for education, health and families, at 330-375-2489.
